We are living in unprecedented times and every one of us is facing a new way of life in one way or another.
Many people are experiencing high levels or stress and anxiety at the moment – and this can take its toll on our dental health, say the dentists at Evesham Dental Health Team on Broadway Road.
When put under stress, our body releases a hormone called cortisol, which increases our appetite. In recent decades, scientific studies have found that comfort eating is often hormone-related and fuelled by our body’s biological response to stressful situations.
Once ingested, fat and sugar-filled foods seem to have a feedback effect that dampens stress-related responses and emotions.
Stress can also cause us to neglect our usual brushing and flossing routines. But if we are coping with stress by reaching for sugary snacks and drinks, we need to be paying extra-careful attention to our teeth and gums.
To keep on top of our oral health, the advice is to brush our teeth for two minutes, twice a day, using fluoride toothpaste. Flossing or using interdental brushes before we brush dislodges food particles and bacteria from between our teeth, making tooth brushing even more effective.
Brushing alone only cleans three of the five surfaces of our teeth, so cleaning between our teeth is a critical part of good oral hygiene as it helps to prevent gum disease by removing plaque from areas the toothbrush alone cannot reach.
