Many patients will be making the most of the reduced Covid restrictions and jetting off on holiday this year. A word of advice from our Evesham dentists – if you are planning on taking a break, please don’t forget your electric toothbrush!
Pack a travel plug adapter
If you usually use an electric toothbrush, consider taking it on holiday with you too, says Richard Colebourne, the principal dentist here at Evesham Dental Health Team on Broadway Road.
Even just a couple of weeks of hand brushing can lead to areas being missed and, without the handy timer, most people underestimate how long they have been brushing, sometimes by almost a minute. So, pack your travel plug adapter so that your electric brush doesn’t run out of charge while you’re away and keep your mouth in the pink.
Don’t forget your floss or interdental brushes
It’s amazing how many patients tell us they always forget to pack their interdental brushes. Buck the trend – they only take up a tiny amount of space and will really help keep your mouth and teeth healthy on holiday.
Sweet treats and sugary cocktails
All-inclusive holidays and the temptation of trying out the local cuisine can lead to over-indulgence in sweet treats, puddings, snacks, ice creams, cocktails and a higher-than-usual number of alcoholic drinks.
There are things you can do to help reduce the harmful effects of the additional sugar and acid on your teeth, such as being extra vigilant about your night time brushing, leaving 30 minutes before brushing your teeth after consuming acidic drinks, and nutralising the acid in your mouth by eating a small piece of cheese or swishing water or milk around your mouth and over your teeth.
Buy a lip balm with SPF
UV rays can cause lip cancer, so applying protective SPF lip balm frequently, even on a dull day, is recommended.
