Evesham dentists offer free mouth cancer screening to all

by Evesham Dental, on 30th November 2016 | Comments Off on Evesham dentists offer free mouth cancer screening to all

Evesham Dental Health Team takes a whole-team approach to checking for mouth cancer and has joined forces with a leading cancer charity to help increase public awareness of the disease.

The dental practice on Broadway Road is part of the Mouth Cancer Screening Accreditation Scheme (MCSAS), which supports dental practices and individual dental professionals who carry out thorough head and neck cancer screenings.

As part of this scheme, dentists at Evesham Dental Health Team offer a FREE mouth cancer screening appointment to any members of the public, all year round, so please call us to book.

Run by the Mouth Cancer Foundation charity, the MCSAS includes professional development and training programmes and is based on three core principles:

Improving early detection by dentists

Greater awareness of head and neck cancers among dentists, especially in patients whose lifestyles put them at relatively high risk, could lead to earlier detection and rapid referral.

Reducing delays in access to diagnosis and treatment

Delays may occur because of limited patient awareness of the symptoms of their cancer leading to delays in visiting their GP or dentist. This can be addressed through better education for patients and dentists in recognising early signs, raising public awareness of risk factors and informing patients of opportunities for oral cancer screening.

Prevention by lifestyle changes

Dental health professionals should take advantage of any opportunities for counselling patients who are known to smoke, chew betel or tobacco and/or are believed to drink heavily. They should offer help with overcoming addiction, including referral to appropriate support services. People should also be made aware of the increasing incidence of mouth cancers related to the HPV Infection.

Our dental team encourages people from across Worcestershire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire to look out for the warning signs of mouth cancer and act if they are worried. For details, click here.

Remember, if in doubt, get checked out
